  • great fun, I did 2 weeks going down the Colorado with my brother and dad.

  • The snake river in Wyoming (Class II-III) is lots of fun.  Highly recommended!

  • No Gauley in W.V.????  This list is incomplete without it.  Speaking strictly of North America, I would say the only better river for whitewater is the Colorado.

  • This IS Great Fun for the Family!  I recommend that everyone try it at least once!

Although I have not been to any of these listed here, I have been several times with my son and friends in the North Carolina/Georgia Region and with quite a few stories to tell!  Rivers include the Chatooga (Deliverance was filmed) Class III-IV, the Pigeon River Class II-III, the French Broad Class III-IV, and the Natahala Class III at the Natahala Outdoor Center.  This is a reputable facility with a highly trained staff.  Some trips are more geared toward family with young children (under 13 yrs) and some trips are geared for the adventure junkie! Much fun!  Everyone should try at least once!

  • I did the Chattooga river like 2 years ago.  First time white water rafting, and It was amazing.  Last part of the trail they asked us who wanted to go through it because it consisted of a huge drop I think it was like a 12 foot drop.  It required a guide in the front as well.  I would post a picture here if I could.

  • What about alaska? There are many great rapids. Six mile river has some intense class V’s  and the scenery is amazing.

  • Try the James river in Richmond, VA. Great whitewater AND a nice cityscape view. A rare combo.

  • Good article but no mention of West Virginia. The Gauley river in Southern WV is awesome. Class V and VI rapids at certain levels. It is seasonal and only runs in the Fall though. There is also the
New River as well. Mainly class II-IV rapids and very good ride. If you like to raft you should surf WV.

  • I agree with atomicjo — those two rivers in West Virginia beat out several on this list.  Cool list though!

  • I would have to agree that this list is incomplete without the Gauley River in WV.  When they open those dams during Gauley season, it’s insane!

  • It’s unbelievable that you say the Zambezi is in Zimbabwe without mentioning Zambia – a much preferred destination these days!

  • You forgot Maine!  The Pennobscot and the Kennebec offer some nice rapids.

  • I have rafted the Dead, Penobscot and Kennebec rivers many times.  I was able to stay in maine all this summer and got to raft the Kennebec every day in July. People will tell you there are better rivers… but counting the scenery, the locals, and the guides, I would just as soon go back to the Kennebec as I would go to any river on this list. A funny story about the summer was watching a boat full of 75 year old women go through a rapid at 10,500 cfs, which is huge water, only to have the boat spin a bunch of times and almost dump truck, and after it happened they started hooting and hollering! Many other stories, but that stands out!

Also, If you want a good, small company to go on a trip with, check out US rafting. The guides will do everything they can to make sure you have an awesome trip! I can vouch through personal experience!
