10 Reasons Why Not to Spend So Much This Christmas!

December 23rd, 2008 | 26 Comments | Posted in Featured

With Christmas comes the festive season and hence, begins the preparation for the arrival of New Year. Christmas means celebration time, and celebrating with friends and folks means splurging money extravagantly. We all rejoice and revel on this occasion by spending whopping amount of money buying clothes, gifts, cards, accessories, decorations, etc., every year, and why not after all its party time. Isn’t it? However, this year, with recession and inflation going hand-in-hand in the global market, Christmas won’t be as merrier as it used to be. So, here are a few reasons for you to not to rather splurge, the money this Christmas:

  1. The current financial crisis, globally, is affecting everyone by and large, directly or indirectly. Thousands of people have lost their jobs, and many of them do not even have enough money to buy two meals everyday for their family. Splurging grandly just to have some fun wouldn’t be a good idea in such a scenario.
  2. When half of the people will be celebrating this day, the other half will be praying for a better tomorrow. In such a case, spending money lavishly to keep oneself happy and content won’t be a justified reason. Ask your conscience if it allows you to do so.
  3. Unlike earlier times, Christmas has now become more of a commercialized exercise. Just because People have enough money to splurge, they’d prefer spending it for no reason or for a mere showoff. Buying expensive gifts, cards, trees, etc., is more of a trend now. In such exhibition people often dismiss the fact that it’s not the time to commercialize; it’s rather a time of spirituality and reflection.
  4. With major hike in prices for everything, inflation is one good reason that makes you think to spend money on unnecessary things. From bread to gifts, everything has gone out of the reach of people. It’s better to take a wise decision before stepping out of the four walls or checking out an online shopping store to shop for things.
  5. With instability in the stock market, your stakes are at high risks. Sensex is playing a foul game with your life. With that in mind, how can you even think of being extravagant this winter, no matter how financially stable you are at the moment.
  6. Moreover, with global warming, the environment has also become unstable. You never know when a calamity can come knocking off your door. It’s rather preferable to keep your hard earned money for those times of need, instead of spending it unnecessarily.
  7. Just look at the number of resources being wasted for the Christmas – cutting down of trees, woods being fired, plastic being misused, etc. This not only leads to environmental degradation, but also a lot of money is spent in the process. So avoid that!
  8. Christmas is the time to share, not to spend lavishly. In stead of spending money on buying gifts and cards for others, spread happiness around. Buy them unforgettable, good times instead of buying useless materialistic show pieces.
  9. Even if you wish to spend your money, spend it wisely. Celebration doesn’t always mean spending lavishly. It’s the time to have fun with family, to catch up with friends and to spend some quality time with your loved ones.
  10. Invest your money wisely to secure your kids a good life. Think twice for your next generation before dispensing it. Save it for your and your kids’ future.

If these aren’t enough reasons for you to avoid splurging this winter season, then it’s high time you should think what should be your responsibility towards your brethrens, and being human how you can help them to overcome this not-so-good time. Have a Merry Christmas!

I don’t agree with you. I will spend all my wallet.

  2. Kevin Says:

I’m so sick of this negative liberal bullshit!

  3. Patti Says:

Unbelievable! Liberals won’t stop crying “the sky is falling”. Listen to these people and you may as well stop living. Merry Christmas!

  4. Pat Says:

Agreed, All ths gloom & doom is not in the spirit of Christmas. Have faith, Love one another, enjoy the holidays anyway you feel fit. The true meaning of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus. True Hope for all. Enjoy……The greedy & the politicians will sow what they reap.

  5. Clark Says:

Here is the most obvious reason:  Save your money so you can survive next year when you lose your job.  The big one is coming

  6. mgroves Says:

So, it’s okay to spend an extravagant amount of money as long as the stock market and the economy is doing okay?  No, I think I will spend my money wisely no matter what the economy is doing.

  7. Sarah Says:

While I believe in the story of the birth of Jesus, I don’t believe God would have wanted us to celebrate the birth of his son by spending money we don’t have on things we don’t need for people we don’t even really like.  There is not a single example in the Bible of any New Testament Christians celebrating his birth, only meeting on the first day of the week to partake in the Lord’s Supper to remember his resurrection.  Birthdays were not commemorated during that time.  The Catholic church decreed a pagan holiday to be the “Christmas” celebration 400 years later.
Hard times are here and more are coming.  That is truth, not liberal negative anything.

  8. Santa Sandman Says:

Lay off the “liberal” labels! That is such a cheap shot and shows very little deep thought on your part. We are in hard times. Haven’t you read a newspaper or spoken with your neighbors lately. Christmas has been over sold for several years now. The greedy have taken Christ out of the celebration of His birthday.

  9. John Says:

Sounds like you have no problems with liberal spending. Maybe you didn’t notice all those peoples losing there homes lately?

  10. jay Says:

Ok, seriously, if you don’t spend your money it isn’t worth much.  Companies stay in business by using money you give them.  If you horde all your cash, they get less money and lay off more people to keep themselves afloat.  If anything, now is a time to spend money to restabilize the economy.  Besides, if you don’t these companies get bailouts and wind up with even MORE of your money.

  11. Shelly Says:

The only one I agree with is #2…for parents who go overboard on gifts out of guilt for not spending enough quality time with your kids.

  12. Terri Says:

I agree with cutting back for sure and did, I sent free e-mail cards and last month had several garage sales and have been living off the money I made and today I bought my son’s Chrismtas present with the last of my garage sale money. It felt good to know that when I get my cc statement next month, there won’t be any charges other than my normal monthly expenses because I paid cash for the most part. I live in a town that reportedly has the highest unemployment rate and even though I’m very happy for those who have had the opportunity to purchase a home because home prices are so low, I don’t think spending extravagantly is wise, we don’t know what tomorrow will bring and we need to conserve and be prepared and keep praying for God’s mercy.

  13. PimpWhoPees Says:

can i spend my christmas money on weed?

  14. Dean Says:

Who really cares about the opinions of right-wing losers? I spend as little as I can all year, just to deprive the merchant class of as much of my income as I can. I can fix or build much of what I need, and I can cook. I buy a lot of things at thrift stores, things that predate Wal-mart, and will outlast me. If we make the rich and powerful less rich, we will make them less powerful. And besides, It’ll be fun.

  15. Bestcontractmobilephone Says:

Really its Unbelievable but need to be concentrate on it.

Anyway Happy Christmas to all of you. http://flash.freditm.net/marry_christmas/marry_christmas.swf

  16. Kathy Says:

This is what I get out of the article, instead of calling it Liberal drivel or right wing losers, the reality is that we dont know what is going to happen because it is not looking too good out there.  We dont know which way it is going to go, could be good and could go bad.  So being a little watchful over our money is not a bad thing.

  17. Ronanki gopalakrishna Says:

I agree with the article, instead of going to club, i will donate the money to the under privileged.

  18. TexasCowboy Says:

Regardless of Middle America, there is one group who will have a nice Christmas - Congress!  They are giving themselves another raise; $4700 each in the middles of this recession.  I wish all Americans could do the same.  Merry Christmas to the do-nothing Congress!

  19. Bob Says:

If you are giving for the joy of giving, I think it is a great thing.  Buying things that people really need and will use would seem to be more appropriate this year for those of us who don’t have a tremedous excess of capital.  I really do want to add to the load in the landfills this year, or actually, ever again.   If you are giving to impress or to attempt to buy happiness, I think that you should reflect on the reason for the season.  Merry Christmas, and a joyous New Year.

  20. Elizabeth Says:

Reading this article was extremely depressing.  I too am tired of the gloom and doom being reported.  Things have been tough for some time now, but our business dropped like a rock after the announcement of the “financial crisis.”  Truth is, things did not change that much overnight in the economy, at least not until people suddenly quit spending in response to the news media’s gloomy reporting.  As far as Christmas, we should always be good stewards of everything that God gives us.  None of this is really ours anyway, its just ours to use.  People should be wise about their spending at all times.  Don’t put yourself in deep debt to have things you want, but take care of your needs, and save for your wants.  Learn to tell the difference between a want and a need and teach your children.  Christmas is about love, about celebrating the Birth of our Lord and Savior and should be  a special time for friends and families.. Special does not have to mean expensive.  Be positive, thank God for what you have, and Merry Christmas.

  21. Megan Says:

The author of this article is pretty stupid. Not only is it redundent and pointless, not going out and buying Christmas gifts can only HURT our already crappy economy. People need to go out and spend to restablize. If you go out and spend, the company will get your money, and the company will stay is business which means, JOBS!! Oh, and really? Global warming???…..Really?

  22. Walter Zimmerman Says:

Who wrote this article?  What a glowing example of bad thinking, needless repetition, and poor editing.  (Note to author: the word brethren is already plural; adding an “s” is just wrong)   In fact, by going to unnecessary lengths to advise thrift, the article simply contradicts itself.  People prone to economies, or non-monetary giving, don’t need another sermon on prudence, and those who prefer to over-extend themselves are unlikely to be swayed by such an unconvincing argument.
Otherwise, here’s hoping that everyone has such happy holidays that they’re embarrassed to talk about them!

  23. franklin Says:

Who knew we’d be in the mess? Maybe the 1% ers. None the less, It is better now to be safe than sorrry. the harsh reality was not shared with us in an honest fashion. After Years of ripping off the public, they got exposed and now after over stessing the system, we better watch out. Have faith, but think things over before making your chioces of how to spend. Because your looking at the forcast. I agree with have fun with family and friends at this time. Go back to the old ways. Good friends and good fun. Have a Happy Holiday All.

  24. jay Says:

I’m not worried about anything, I have a plan.  After Obama helps out the wellfare community I’m going to get fired from my job and break my leg so I can live off unemployment and disability.  Sucks for anyone who actually works to pay my bills though.

  25. jhesqi Says:

Somehow I like number 10. Invest your money wisely. This is actually through even if we don’t have any global financial crisis. This should be made as a habit. However, there should be still some moments when you need to spend for yourself.
